The sad reality is that most animals are not eating well, regardless of what the bag of food may say.  All animal foods (with the exception with a few organic brands) contain ingredients that are either bi-products from the human food industry or are rejected for use in human food sources.  Most foods also contain high quantities of grains such as corn, wheat and millet.  These grains are not readily digestible in cats or dogs, so they are passed to the hindgut for microbial fermentation.  This leads to a change in normal pH, decrease in beneficial microbes and heat is released during this fermentation process.  This excess heat can lead to dehydration, which manifests as a reduction in tearing, thicker saliva, hard feces, dry skin, decreased joint fluid and concentrated urine.
